That's the pattern we kept seeing when we tested it. We can't see inside the model, so nothing here is a claim about how the algorithm works — it's what we observed across our own runs, plus what OpenAI has confirmed publicly.

When we scored real dental-implant pages on that first-100-words test in September 2026, roughly 87% stated two or fewer of five decision-facts in their opening (a measure of opening fact coverage, not overall AI visibility; adjudicated across two scoring passes). Most page openings simply don't state enough for an AI to repeat. Here's what we observed, and what you can do about it.

How ChatGPT SEO works: sources, citations, and run-to-run variance

Let's set expectations before the tactics. We don't have the algorithm, and neither does anyone writing one of these guides. What we have is a set of things OpenAI has said in public, plus a large batch of our own test runs. So read everything below as "here's what we saw," not "here's the rule."

A few things worth knowing up front:

It recommends sources; it doesn't expose a stable ranked SERP. ChatGPT doesn't hand you a numbered results page the way Google does. When it answers a question, it assembles a reply and sometimes names or links a handful of sources. So the goal isn't a position; it's being one of the sources it draws from. We'll say "shows up" or "gets cited" throughout, never "ranks #1," because there's no stable #1 position to defend the way there is on a Google SERP.

Results vary run to run. Ask the same question twice and you can get different sources. In our recommendation test we ran 150 prompts three times each (450 runs), and while the fact-rich-vs-fact-poor gap held across all three passes, the specific sources named shifted from pass to pass. That's important for your expectations: showing up once isn't proof, and disappearing once isn't failure. Treat it as a distribution, not a ranking.

ChatGPT Search leans on web search providers, Bing among them. When ChatGPT pulls live results, it's using third-party web search providers, and Bing is one of them. That's why the Bing side of the house (below) is worth a look, though it's hygiene, not a guaranteed pipe.

With that framing set, here's what we tested.

What we tested: our own GEO scan

Instead of repeating other people's numbers, we ran our own studies. Short version of the setup: we scored real business pages on whether an AI could answer from them, we swept a batch of real buyer questions to see when an AI answer even appears, and we ran a recommendation test across many prompts and multiple passes to see which pages get named.

A few headline observations:

  • Most openings don't state the buyer's facts up top. Across 144 scored dental-implant records (153 gathered, 17 US metros, dated 2026-09-05, after setting aside 3 with extraction-unconfirmed openings), the opening fact-coverage score averaged about 1.64 of 5 and roughly 87% (125 of 144) stated two or fewer of five decision-facts in the first ~100 words. This scores presence of facts in the opening, not a page's overall AI visibility; it is adjudicated across two scoring passes, and the 3 excluded records each score 0 (a correct extraction could only raise them), kept as a historical note.
  • Cost questions tended to trigger an AI answer, in the queries we captured. Of 150 AI Overview queries, 81 returned an answer; among those, all 50 cost/price queries showed an AI Overview. The pages cited for cost mostly stated a price, though some quoted a third-party market average rather than the clinic's own, so we don't compare that against pages generally.
  • Pages that stated their facts were cited somewhat more often, in one slice. On the stable measure (domain cited in at least two of three passes), the higher-fact group was cited about 1.8× as often as the lower-fact group. On a looser definition it's about 1.4×, and the top bucket is a single page, so this is a specific slice, not a 2×-on-every-query effect. The outcome is domain citation, not being "named" or "recommended," on a proxy AI-search setup, not the default ChatGPT app.
  • Page-fact richness was associated with citation in this sample. In a regression on 174 clinics, page-fact richness was associated with domain citation (odds ratio about 2.0, 95% CI 1.4 to 3.0, p under 0.001). We did not detect a statistically significant association for the review metrics; this does not establish that their effects are absent. We didn't measure site age.

One caveat we'll keep repeating: this is association, not causation. We're reporting what tracked with getting named, in one vertical, on dated runs, not a proven lever inside the model. And our recommendation engine was an AI search model with live web access used as a proxy for AI search, not the default ChatGPT app. Full method, sample sizes, and dates are on /research.

6 things we'd work on first for ChatGPT visibility

1. Put your verifiable facts in the first ~100 words

This is where we'd start, because it's what most sites get wrong: in our opening scan, most pages didn't state the buyer's facts up top. AI answers reuse facts that a page states, and external analyses of Google AI Overviews find the opening carries a large share of what gets cited (one measured about 38% of cited passages in the first 100 words, on AI Overviews, not ChatGPT). If your price, your named provider, your candidacy criteria, your spec, or your guarantee is stated only lower down, it is not within the opening we measured. That does not make lower text unreachable; it just is not where the opening scan looks.

What to do: open the page with a plain-language answer to the question a buyer would actually ask, and name the concrete facts right there. Not "we offer competitive pricing," but the actual number, the actual credential, the actual detail.

Why we'd start here: when we scored 144 dental-implant openings, about 87% stated two or fewer of five decision-facts up top, and the ones most often missing were the ones a buyer decides on (price appeared in the first ~100 words on only ~3% of pages, financing ~7%, a named provider ~38%, candidacy ~63%, options ~54%; counting discounts as a price is the only thing that lifts price to ~5%). And in our recommendation runs, pages that stated their facts were cited somewhat more often in the stable slice we measured, about 1.8 times, on a proxy AI-search setup rather than the ChatGPT app. Treat that as an association in one vertical, not a proven lever. Stating your facts early is not a trick; it gives a machine something to repeat.

2. Build corroborating mentions on sources AI already retrieves

The old backlink instinct only half-applies here. Published citation studies suggest that mentions (your name showing up, consistently, on sources these tools already trust) track with getting cited. It's less "who links to you" and more "who talks about you, and do the facts match everywhere."

Practical version:

  • Be consistent. Same name, same core facts, across your site, your profiles, and third-party write-ups. Contradictory facts across sources give an AI nothing solid to repeat.
  • Earn mentions on high-authority sites in your field: trade publications, roundups, interviews, credible directories. A mention in a piece an AI is likely to retrieve puts your facts where retrieval can find them.
  • Digital PR, not link volume. The point is being talked about by sources that get cited, not accumulating links.

This is a table-stakes tactic every serious guide covers, and our data doesn't contradict it, but don't confuse "mentioned a lot" with a guaranteed outcome.

3. Get cited where these tools already look: Reddit, YouTube, "best-of" lists, directories

If AI answers are assembled from retrieved sources, then being present on the sources that get retrieved is half the battle. In practice that means a short list of usual suspects:

  • Community platforms like Reddit show up as heavily-cited domains across published citation studies. A genuine, useful presence in the right subreddit or forum (not spam) puts your name where these tools read.
  • YouTube matters because transcripts are text an AI can pull. A video that clearly states the facts, with a real transcript, is another surface you occupy.
  • "Best of" and comparison listicles in your niche. When a buyer asks "what are the best X," these are exactly the pages that get quoted. Getting included (legitimately) puts you in that answer.
  • Credible directories in your space act as corroboration. When your facts appear in more than one trusted place, there's more for an AI to lean on.

The framing we'd keep straight: you're not gaming a ranking, you're making sure your name and facts exist on the surfaces these tools draw from. If they're not there, retrieval has nothing to find. One caveat worth stating: which surfaces matter shifts by engine and even by month — YouTube looms large for some engines and small for ChatGPT; Reddit's citation share in ChatGPT dropped sharply in 2026. So treat Reddit and YouTube as examples, and actually check which sources ChatGPT cites for your questions rather than assuming a universal list.

4. Keep content fresh: recency is observable in what gets cited

Across the SERP for this very topic, most pieces that show up are dated to the current year and updated recently. Stale pages are largely absent. Analyses of AI activity point the same way, though their baselines differ, so treat recency as a tendency worth acting on, not a fixed rule.

What that means for you:

  • Put real dates on pages, and actually update them — not a cosmetic date bump but a genuine refresh of facts and figures.
  • Revisit your cornerstone pages on a schedule. If your price changed, your page should say so.
  • New, accurate pages can be cited over older ones. Freshness is one of the few page properties you fully control.

Caveat, because this is where over-claiming creeps in: "fresher" is a tendency we observe in what gets cited, not a dial you turn for a guaranteed lift. Update because your facts should be current; the visibility is a side effect, not a promise.

5. Structure your page for extraction: schema and clean headings

An AI can only use what it can parse. Structure helps it parse.

  • Answer-first formatting. Lead sections with the answer, then the detail. Question-shaped headings (the way a person would ask) map to the way people query these tools in plain language.
  • Schema markup. Semantic HTML and clean structure do the heavy lifting here; schema (Organization, or a type that genuinely fits the page) is useful hygiene that helps a machine read what a page is, not a proven ChatGPT lever. OpenAI's own publisher guidance talks about crawl access, not schema. It won't rescue a page that states nothing; it clarifies a page that already states its facts.
  • Scannable structure. Clean H2/H3 hierarchy, short paragraphs, lists where lists fit. Buried facts are hard to extract; framed facts are easy.

None of this is exotic; it's good structure that happens to also make a page machine-readable.

6. Make sure an AI can actually reach you: crawlers, Bing, and llms.txt

You can do everything above and still be invisible if you've blocked the door. Check the plumbing:

  • AI crawler access. In robots.txt, confirm you're not blocking the AI user-agents you want to allow. For ChatGPT Search specifically, the one that matters is OAI-SearchBot (GPTBot governs training use; ChatGPT-User is live user-triggered fetches), and all three are OpenAI's. Blocking them is a choice some sites make on purpose; just make it a choice, not an accident.
  • Cloudflare / CDN AI settings. Many sites now have a network-level toggle for AI crawlers. If yours is on and you didn't mean it, you've opted out without realizing it.
  • Bing Webmaster Tools. Bing is one of the third-party providers ChatGPT Search may use, so submitting your site and sitemap to Bing Webmaster Tools is reasonable, underrated SEO hygiene — not a guaranteed ChatGPT pipe. It's free, so worth doing.
  • llms.txt (experimental, unproven). A newer convention: a plain /llms.txt file pointing AI tools to your key content. Adoption is early and Google has said its Search and AI features don't use it, so treat this as a low-cost experiment, not a visibility lever. Harmless to add; don't expect it to move anything on its own.

Access works differently from the other tactics: if a page can't be crawled or rendered, it's unconfirmed, not "absent" — a blocked URL can still surface as a bare link or title through a third-party search provider, but for real summaries and snippets OAI-SearchBot needs in. From your side, an inaccessible page is a page that can't be properly cited. Fix access first, then the rest of the list has something to work with.

A repeatable way to check and improve your visibility

Do this in the order the dependencies actually run, not as a ranked list of "factors."

1. Pick one task and one engine. For example, "show up when someone asks ChatGPT Search for a dentist who does implants in my city." Different engines behave differently, so fix one to start.

2. Check access and whether you already appear. Confirm OAI-SearchBot is allowed in robots.txt and your key page renders as crawlable text. Then ask your real buyer questions and note whether you appear at all today. If a page cannot be reached or rendered, that is an access problem to fix first, not a content one.

3. Score your opening for fact coverage. Read only the first ~100 words of your target page and give one point for each decision-fact stated plainly (for a service business, usually price, a named provider or credential, and who it is for; adapt the set to your field). The 0 to 5 total is opening fact coverage, not a prediction of citation and not an "AI readiness" verdict. A low score usually just means the buyer's facts are not within the opening we measured, which you can fix.

4. Keep a small observation log. Fix a short, stable set of natural buyer questions and record, for each: engine and interface, date, region and language, search mode, whether personalization or memory was on, the response, and the sources it drew on. Mark separately whether you were mentioned, your domain was cited, your page was cited, you were recommended, and whether the stated fact was correct. The number of repeats is a working budget, not proof of statistical significance.

5. Add relevant external presence, then re-measure. Where your buyers' questions get answered from sources beyond your site, work on being present and consistent there. After any change, re-run the same question set and compare. Do not attribute a change to the text alone; too many things move at once.

A worked opening example

Before (0 of 3 facts up top): "We are a patient-focused implant practice committed to excellence and personalized care in a comfortable environment."

After (3 of 3, still readable): "Dental implants in Austin start at $1,800 per implant, placed by Dr. Lena Ortiz (board-certified, 12 years). Good candidates have healthy gums and enough jawbone; we confirm with a scan at the first visit."

The "after" is not keyword stuffing; it answers what a buyer asks and states the facts plainly, so a person reads it well and a machine has something concrete to reuse. Do the same with your own real numbers and names.

You can also let a model do the scoring. This is an adapted checklist, not the dental-study rubric (which used price, financing, provider, candidacy, and options), so don't compare its score with the study's results. It reads only what you paste, so it scores your opening, not your whole page or your odds of being cited.

What we don't claim

A lot of writing on this topic reads like the rules are settled. They aren't, and we'd rather say so.

  • We don't claim to know how ChatGPT decides. Everything above is "what we observed" or "what OpenAI has stated," never "the algorithm does X."
  • No one can promise "#1 in ChatGPT." ChatGPT Search does rank sources by a number of factors, but there's no stable #1 position to defend the way there is on a Google SERP, and results vary run to run: across the three passes in our 450-run test, the fact-rich-vs-fact-poor gap held but the specific sources named kept shifting. Anyone guaranteeing a position is guessing.
  • Association, not causation. Our numbers show what tracked with getting cited, in specific verticals, on dated runs. They're strong enough to act on and measured enough not to oversell.
  • Gaming has a shelf life. There's a real debate that brute-force repetition currently gets a name in front of these tools more than genuine authority does. Maybe, for now. It rhymes with the link schemes that worked in 2005 until they got penalized. We'd build the durable version: real facts, real mentions, real freshness. It survives the next update; the tricks might not.

ChatGPT vs. Google: how the playbooks differ

They overlap more than the hype suggests, but the emphasis shifts. The biggest difference is what you measure: on Google you track a relatively stable position; on ChatGPT you track citation/mention probability across queries and repeated runs.
